Effective Communication —
How to use the 12 Principles of Astrology to improve your communication skills

The next four updates will bring you some tools you can use to understand the people you deal with every day. Instead of thinking of 12 signs we will concentrate of four divisions of 12. The “elements” Fire, Earth, Air, and Water describe three signs each. This week we will take a look at the Element, Fire. Keep in mind that we are combinations of all four. The idea is to analyze the one that seems to dominate.

Why does it matter?

We all need the help of others. From the time you start your day until you go to bed at night, one of the most important tasks facing you is to communicate effectively with the people you encounter during the day. This connection may be casual or intimate. For example: You may not know the person who pours your first cup of coffee or you may have been living with them for years. You may be the person serving the coffee. In any case, your contact can be pleasant, agreeable, and positive or it may be troubling, annoying, and set your teeth on edge. That encounter can set the tone for the whole day.

Who sets the tone?

That is a hard one to answer because it is our perception of the experience that becomes our reality. Do you consider yourself to be a happy, positive person in the morning? Or perhaps you prefer to be left alone until you are really awake, at around noon. What I call the “quick starters” are annoyed by people who are “slow starters”. Slow starters are equally as annoyed by the quick-start person who is jolly and bouncing around and eager to get going.

How does this apply to one’s family?

Someone said, “You can choose your friends but family is a package deal; what you see is what you get”. So what do you do when one person takes the view, “I am who I am and I hope you can adjust”?  Another person feels martyred, “Everyone expects me to adjust to his or her personality, how about me and what I want?”

Fire signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius are the ones to start the action.

The Fire person is spontaneous, and takes a “Me first” position. “I want what I want and I want it NOW, I really wanted it yesterday, but at the very least I should have it today!” They express emotion as they feel it. They tend to be enthusiastic, confident, dramatic and fun companions. They are often considered by other signs to be self-centered and foolish risk takers. Yet they are generous when it occurs to them. They will encourage you to have fun, to play and to enjoy life more. They are restless and may find an excuse to travel or to gamble in business. If the person has a zest for life, they may have a strong Fire statement in their chart. The world would be pretty dull without their irrepressible energy.
