Personal Identity Includes Philosophy and Religious Beliefs

In a recent article, we examined the importance of establishing one’s identity. One of the most important facets of your identity is your belief about your relationship to the Universal Life Force, The Source, God, or the name you use for the Divine Principle. This belief is shown in your chart in a variety of ways.

I will explain the importance of the planets, signs and houses that create a theme for the way you are likely to approach your spirituality and how you incorporate it into who you believe yourself to be; in short how it forms the foundation for your Identity.

The first experience you have of feeling connected to something outside yourself is with your Mother. If this bonding with a feeling of love is successful it is easy for you to believe in the idea of loving and being loved. For many people this is also the beginning of feeling worthy of being loved by God (or the name you use for the Divine Principle).

The Sun/Moon connection and the favorable aspects to your 4th house (home and family) will establish the possibility of a stable home environment within which you can thrive.

Conversely, you may have challenging aspects between these points and respond with fear and anxiety, often followed by anger. The anger is the result of the inner knowing that this is not the natural way or “the way it is supposed to be”. I believe that your connection to the Source has you hard wired to an expectation that you will be loved because that is your true nature. If you fail to connect with this love you can overcome the disappointment but a feeling that something is missing may cause you to search for something to fill that void.

The planet Neptune and its connection in your chart provides a clue to how you will seek God in some form. Neptune is the principle of an ultimate sense of Oneness with all of Life, a vision of a world of harmony, peace and selfless love. It represents the desire to feel that you are united with something Greater than yourself. The way Neptune is connected to other features of your chart will indicate some of the ways you will respond to this inner search for the ideal.

A positive response may be expressed through a profound faith in the basic goodness of God.  Your faith my be expressed in formal religion, service to those in need, love of nature, music, art and humanity. If a person feels hopeless in the face of what they perceive as the wickedness of the world or a personal sorrow that seems to have no answer, he/she may turn to some form of escape.

The escape into a fantasy may take many forms. Alcohol, drugs, daydreaming, sleeping instead of connecting with life are all ways of escaping the harshness of their life. The chart often reveals the rationale for the feeling of martyrdom that overwhelms them. An astrologer can help in uncovering the root cause of the feeling of hopelessness. We are each capable of reconnecting to the inner truth of our being. You have probably known a friend who found a life work, a life partner, or a religious or philosophical belief that restored joy and meaning to their world.

Jupiter provides another clue to the way an individual will establish a more formal way of expressing faith and optimism in a philosophical or religious belief. Planets in the 9th house often show how the early life pattern reinforced the idea that through education, exploring new horizons through travel, and a family belief system, one can connect with the Source of all wisdom.

If on the other hand the connections to Jupiter lead to over optimism and a desire to take risks and gamble with life, the disappointments that ensue can lead to a cynical rejection of the idea of a Higher force upon which they can rely. We have all known persons who seem to be tempting “fate” to punish them or prove that life is hard. It is as if they will finally have proof that whatever guiding principle is out there, it cannot be counted on for support. Jupiter is a twelve-year cycle and continues to provide an open door of opportunity.

Entire chapters have been written about the many avenues to a philosophy based on faith in a Divine Principle. As we make the search for our true identity based upon a feeling of being connected to the Source of all love, wisdom and power, we discover the key to a rewarding life. Every chart is a blueprint to guide you in that search.
